On November 20th we posted about the horrifying abuse taking place at angora rabbit farms in Asia. We were not previously aware of this suffering, duh, even though we closely follow animal rights issues and consider ourselves animal activists. Shame on me… was I sleeping through that brutal chapter of the animal holocaust? I have to admit that I’ve been on the PETA mailing list for years, but every couple of years I need to unsubscribe — I hate to admit that sometimes it just becomes too much to bear — then like clockwork, after a couple of weeks without getting up close and personal with the suffering of animals throughout the world, I re-subscribe and jump back into the fray. Perhaps that’s my lapse with the angora issue. I’m being honest, please don’t beat me up.
So, we visited PETA today, anxious for updates about Sunder the elephant who we posted about yesterday (I just cannot forget about him — he haunts my dreams and if there were a way I could transport him from his misery, I would). There it was, smack dab on the front page of PETA: Calvin Kein, Tommy Hilfiger ban angora! Hoorah! If enough fashion industry powerhouses decide to ban angora from their offerings, it will surely make a dent in the farming industry. Keep in mind that The Gap is not responding to this issue at all.
