Let’s Celebrate Spring!

It’s snowing outside this first day of spring here in Ontario, Canada, but still I feel such joy that this beautiful season of revival has finally arrived. Spring is all about new beginnings and endless possibilities. It’s hard not to get excited about Spring.

Spring Softies” by Lisa Audit, a Canadian artist with a love for nature and the world of decorating. Her artwork can be found, not only on the wall, but on many household items and everyday products around the home. While a majority of her earlier work was painted with oil on canvas, she has rediscovered the beauty of watercolors and has brought a fresh, clean, and inviting look to her artwork. In 2014, Lisa made the charming and inspiring town of Quebec City her home and looks forward to painting her love of nature and the outdoors for years to come. Visit her website here

One of My Favorite Spring Quotes by Naturalist John Muir

“How deep our sleep last night in the mountain’s heart, beneath the trees and stars, hushed by solemn-sounding waterfalls and many soothing voices in sweet accord whispering peace!

“And our first pure mountain day, warm, calm, cloudless — how immeasurable it seems, how serenely wild! I can scarcely remember its beginning. Along the river, over the hills, in the ground, in the sky, spring work is going on with joyful enthusiasm, new life, new beauty, unfolding, unrolling in glorious exuberant extravagance — new birds in their nests, new winged creatures in the air, and new leaves, new flowers, spreading, shining, rejoicing everywhere.”

John Muir (1838-1914) is often called the “Father of the National Parks.” In 1890, due in large part to his efforts, an act of the US Congress created Yosemite National Park. Muir was also personally involved in the creation of Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon national parks. The idea of national parks eventually spread worldwide.

Quotes About Animals

Copper and Nickel by Marilyn Hagerman

When animals express their feelings they pour out like water from a spout. Animals’ emotions are raw, unfiltered, and uncontrolled. Their joy is the purest and most contagious of joys and their grief the deepest and most devastating. Their passions bring us to our knees in delight and sorrow.”
― Marc BekoffThe Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow, and Empathy – and Why They Matter

A Message From Farm Sanctuary

Farm animals are among the most abused creatures on Earth.

An estimated 77,047,000,959 land animals were slaughtered worldwide for food in 2018. Many were raised on factory farms, which maximize agribusiness profits at the expense of the animals, the environment, social justice, and public health.

Quote of the Day

“Classical Horse” by Marilyn Hageman ~ Today’s Thoreau quote is certainly a poignant one, and not to trivialize its meaning, but the above canvas hangs in my studio sitting room and I love it, but no matter how many times I look at it, I see a black horn sticking out from the side of this horse’s head when clearly it is an ear.

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

My Favorite Tree Art

“Tree of Witness” the Third Place prize-winning drawing by artist Ruth Howard in the Strokes of Genius 13 art competition. The artist uses realism as a tool to bring metaphorical meaning to her work.

Excerpted from Artist’s Network:

Denise Howard loves going fast. She used to race motorcycles competitively on her days off from her job as a software engineer. When it comes to her art, however, she slows right down to savor every detail. Her third-place prizewinning drawing, Tree of Witness, is one in her ongoing series of detailed portraits of trees—and Howard doesn’t expect to run out of subjects any time soon.

It was the gnarled intricacy of the ancient Osage Orange in New York City’s Central Park that caught her eye. “Trees embody their life experiences in their shape, bark, knots, holes, and branches,” Howard says. “Imagine a lifetime of standing in silent witness to the full spectrum of human behavior—from delightful to monstrous. What would it do to a human? What would it do to a tree?”

2017

Wire, clay, acrylic, pigment powder

Our memories are fluid and incomplete, yet they are often the wellspring of inspiration for our creative endeavours. These tiny foal relics are tangible memorials to the unspoken and its significance to the human imagination.

No taller than 4in, there are 8 foals in this series:

Ace – “the best one” in Latin, this alert, laying colt has a pink nose and two bold socks.

Akoni – “worthy of praise” in Latin, this frisky paint is using his long legs for their most important purpose; running.

Alta – “elevated” in Latin, stretches to investigated something interesting she’s found.

Amata – “beloved” in Latin, stands proudly showing off her long legs and pink nose.

Amias – “beloved” in Latin, is curled up for a peaceful nap next to his mother.

Argento – “like silver” in Latin, checks to see if his mum is still in sight.

Aureo – “golden” in Latin, is in her element, standing under an open sky.

Avis – “like a bird” in Latin, this filly has four white socks and a free spirit.

Fun Quote of the Day

from lisa 2

Many thanks to my friend Lisa, a wildlife rehabber, for sharing this excerpt from Jane Seabrook’s Furry Logic books. The artwork is gorgeous and I like the light-hearted poke at growing older since I just turned 68 recently; a fairly ripe, dare I say, old age. The thing is I feel 20 years younger…until I look in the mirror. Ha Ha

JANE SEABROOK is an illustrator and designer who lives in Auckland, New Zealand. In recent years, her artwork has focused on paintings of wildlife for the Furry Logic series of books.

She shares her life with her husband, two teenage children, and a growing menagerie of assorted animals.

Equine Artist Kim McElroy ~ Cougar Spirit Dance

I’ve been a fan and followed the work of equine artist Kim McElroy for many years now. She does commission work and “Cougar Spirit Dance” is one of her most recent. Kim crafts a poem for each painting and includes the back story on the horses she paints. If you love horses and art, visit Kim’s website at https://spiritofhorse.com

For this Cougar Spirit Dance, here is her poem and story:

Freedom of the Spirit
is achieved from the courage
to overcome the pain of inner and outer wounds,

The strength to climb
the mountains of adversity,

And the heart to ride
the wings of destiny.

~ Kim McElroy

The inspiration for “Cougar Spirit Dance” came from images I received during a meditation asking for a vision to portray the Soul Essence of a horse named Cougar.  Cougar’s story is fascinating.  A quarter horse bred for racing, he was born with a domestic herd and raised in the wild as a young colt, but when he was four months old a cougar injured him and killed his mother. Somehow Cougar escaped and then survived against all odds alone through a harsh mountain winter, from a combination of instinct, intelligence, and ingenuity.  He was found again the following Spring.

I asked for a vision of how to create the intent and meaning of this message in a painting.  I saw a feather, vivid against the sun.  It was an eagle feather.  Gradually, I saw the imagery of Cougar running, superimposed against an eagle and a mountain lion, as a reminder of the gift of overcoming adversity.  Now Kent and Cougar rise on the wings of the eagle to new heights of power and strength.

Nature Quote of the Day

For me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. Not like hermits who have stolen away out of some weakness, but like great, solitary men, like Beethoven and Nietzsche. In their highest boughs the world rustles, their roots rest in infinity; but they do not lose themselves there, they struggle with all the force of their lives for one thing only: to fulfil themselves according to their own laws, to build up their own form, to represent themselves. Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. When a tree is cut down and reveals its naked death-wound to the sun, one can read its whole history in the luminous, inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happiness and prosperity stand truly written, the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured. And every young farmboy knows that the hardest and noblest wood has the narrowest rings, that high on the mountains and in continuing danger the most indestructible, the strongest, the ideal trees grow.” – Hermann Hesse, Author of Bäume, Betrachtungen und Gedichte

This quote is from my art shop, The Phoenix Collection, which is in the midst of a makeover to focus only on our passion—nature-inspired art featuring animals, flowers and trees and First Nations art. Colouful, beautiful and timeless!

“A Mothers Love” Gorilla Mom & Baby at The Phoenix Collection

We love this photo by Jordi Piqué of a mother gorilla and her baby. Jordi put in many hours trying to gain the trust of the gorilla mom before he could take this and other photographs of the gorillas at the Barcelona Zoo. Gorillas are shy, quiet animals and vigilantly protect their infants from the eyes of humans and their cameras. In this photograph, Jordi has managed to capture the tenderness that a mother gorilla feels for her infant—akin to that of a human mom—only after many patient hours of observation. This poignant photographic print is available at The Phoenix Collection here.

Introducing Jordi Piqué Fine Art Photography at The Phoenix Collection

I have started learning Spanish today at Duolingo. What fun! Put in less than an hour on the basics and apparently I’m now 9% fluent in Spanish. :)) I have an affinity for Spain with ancestry on my mother’s side of Spanish, Portugese and Italian, and hope to travel to Spain some day. I was recently inspired to learn Spanish by my email communications with a fine art photographer whose gorgeous photos we are showcasing in our shop. He writes to me in Spanish which I translate into English with Google—the more I read, the more I want to actually learn to speak, read and write in this lovely language.

We are delighted to welcome Jordi Piqué to The Phoenix Collection and proud to present his beautiful photographs of chimpanzees, gorillas, mangabey monkeys and other wildlife and nature photography. Although he has exhibited his work extensively in Spain and won contests and awards, with the exception of displaying his portfolio on Flickr, his work has not been available in North America. When he discovered us online he sent us some of his work. We were moved by his poignant photographs and immediately invited him to join us with an exclusive gallery showcasing his photographs for sale and we’re happy he accepted.

I Love You Mom” is our first addition to his gallery and I will be sharing many more as I add them. We are long-time supporters of the Jane Goodall Institute and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and so pleased to now have artworks featuring chimpanzees and gorillas in our collection. It also gives us a perfect opportunity to donate a portion of our profits from the sale of these prints to a couple of wonderful organizations who have for so many years worked so tirelessly to save these precious animals who are so closely related to us.

Ode to the Late Lawrence Anthony of Thula Thula Wildlife Preserve and Founder of the Earth Organization

This article, “The Elephant Wars” by Tom Clynes relates his exciting interview with Lawrence Anthony, co-owner with his wife Françoise of Thula Thula Game Reserve. Sadly, Anthony died in 2012, but this article gives us a glimpse of the enigmatic, inspiring man who authored “The Elephant Whisperer”, “Babylon’s Ark” and “The Last Rhino” who saved Bagdad zoo’s animals in a brave solitary effort after the war, rescued a band of rogue elephants and so much more.

This courageous, irreverent and highly effective conservationist was a hero to animals and animal advocates everywhere. I discovered him from a fellow blogger’s comments—now I’m looking forward to reading all of his books, researching trips to South Africa, planning how I might possibly afford to get there and work with rhinos, elephants, gorillas, etc. etc.. Totally inspired! Lawrence’s example of  take-action animal advocacy and down-to-earth philosophy about life resonates deeply with me and a trip to Thula Thula has now been added to my bucket list. Take a look at these glorious accomodations, gourmet food and all the fabulous wildlife you will encounter when you visit  www.thulathula.com.

The rhino in our featured image is Roger, subject of this fabulous painting by wildlife artist James Corwin who met and fell in love with this rhino he met in Africa who was sadly poached. He so mourned the loss of Roger who inspired this painting and Jame’s love of rhinos. James has worked extensively with rhinos in Africa, protecting them from poachers and learning as much as he can about this majestic creature. Rhinos are his favourite animal. The original painting is sold but is available at The Phoenix Collection in Limited Edition prints.

Happy to Be Alive and One With Nature

Here’s a few quotes about just loving being alive and appreciating nature:

Who would have believed that some/many people were beauty-and-nature-blind more than a 100 years ago—thought it was just a modern-day disorder…

“Multitudes of people are beauty-blind to the outdoor pictures. I doubt if one in a hundred begins to take in the beauty visible on even a short walk in city or country.” ~Delia Lyman Porter, “The Beauty-Blind,” An Anti-Worry Recipe and Other Stories, 1905

Well, here’s a great way of thinking about aging…as long as one can enjoy the beauty of Nature you’re good to go…

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed, but Nature’s sources never fail.” ~John Muir, Our National Parks

And then there’s the unbeatable, inimitable, beautiful words of  Wordsworth…

“…And this prayer I make,
Knowing that Nature never did betray
The heart that loved her; ’tis her privilege,
Through all the years of this our life, to lead
From joy to joy: for she can so inform
The mind that is within us, so impress
With quietness and beauty, and so feed
With lofty thoughts, that neither evil tongues,
Rash judgments, nor the sneers of selfish men,
Nor greetings where no kindness is, nor all
The dreary intercourse of daily life,
Shall e’er prevail against us, or disturb
Our chearful faith that all which we behold
Is full of blessings…”
~William Wordsworth, lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey, on revisiting the banks of the Wye during a tour, 1798 July 13th

Osho may have been higher than a kite but he has a point…

“Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars… and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful. Everything is simply happy. Trees are happy for no reason; they are not going to become prime ministers or presidents and they are not going to become rich and they will never have any bank balance. Look at the flowers — for no reason. It is simply unbelievable how happy flowers are.” ~Osho

Ah, to be be poor and feel blessed…

“I may never traverse the halls of art, yet the dawning day is mine, and the fading twilight, and the lake at eve, and the galaxy of the midnight sky…. I may never place in a Dresden vase one single hothouse flower, but I may lave me in a field of yellow buttercups.” ~Muriel Strode Lieberman (1875–1964), My Little Book of Prayer, 1904

I say yeah…

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it…. People think pleasing God is all God care about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.” ~Alice Walker, The Color Purple, 1982

Hard to beat ee.cummings, simple and real…

“I thank you God for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes.” ~e.e. cummings

Quote of the Day

“Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can.” — The Dalai Lama

The Phoenix Collection Presents Wildlife Artist James Corwin

The Phoenix Collection is proud to present the stunning wildlife art of reknowned wildlife artist James Corwin whose fabulous art is inspired by the animals of the exotic places he visits. You may view his in-progress gallery The Art of James Corwinwith many more beautiful paintings to be added over the next few days.

Our blog header above features his masterful painting, “Roger-African Rhino,” Although the original has been sold for $5,500 USD, a Limited Edition of only 95 prints are available at “Roger-African Rhino” by James Corwin in 8″ x 10″, “16” x 20″ or the original size of 24″ x 30.” Each print is signed and numbered by James and is also offered in an embellished version with paint and texture added by the artist to reproduce the look and feel of the original painting, a truly unique one-of-a-kind work of art.

The story behind “Roger” is heartbreaking. Roger was killed by poachers and his mate critically injured only months after James, on safari in Africa, met him at the game reserve, Jembisa – An African Bush Home. Even though Roger had 24-hour security watching him in the bush and a poisoned horn to deter poachers, they were able to savagely attack him and his wife Rosie, who was pregnant. It is not known whether her baby survived. James  was deeply saddened by the news and has now painted “Roger” and also “In Memory,” a painting he donated to Safari Club International to honour this beautiful rhino’s spirit. In 2016, Safari Club International has made James Corwin their spotlight artist.

Dedicated to not only his art but also wildlife conservation, James is flying down to Africa this week to work at an anti-poaching station and rhino orphanage. For 5 weeks he will be learning all about efforts to end poaching and protect rhinos. It will be an incredible experience for him and he’s sure many paintings will follow.

About James Corwin

James Corwin designs distinct oil paintings through a unique balance of gestural paint techniques and precise detail. Primarily focused on wildlife he creates a finely detailed subject often emerging through obscure and atmospheric landscapes. Avoiding static portraits and general themes in wildlife art, Corwin aims to engage the viewer through his dynamic compositions that stir emotion. “Wildlife in nature is elusive and I desire to capture this reality.”

With an appreciation for both fine detail and contemporary art, Corwin exquisitely marries the two in each painting with detailed subjects and loosely constructed backgrounds often exposing the underpainting and raw canvas.

Corwin gathers inspiration and references from his frequent travels to exotic destinations around the world. A recent trip to South Africa opened his eyes to threats of poaching on wildlife. A portion of his sales support conservation projects throughout the world.

Corwin has established himself as a widely collected artist at a very young age. His artwork is collected nationally and internationally as he participates in prestigious exhibitions and auctions throughout the year. He is the youngest artist to ever participate in both Dallas Safari Club and Safari Club International in Las Vegas. Typically he paints 10-12 hours per day, 7 days a week. He also has two studios overlooking the white sandy beaches of Long Island, NY and located in Lakeside, MT overlooking Flathead Lake and the Swan Mountain Range.

By providing utmost quality and innovation in his painting, Corwin creates a sustaining legacy of integrity and loyalty in his art and conservation.

Corwin was born June 24, 1991 in Honolulu, HI. Two years later he moved to Montana where he grew up in Kalispell. He participated in a 2-year International Art Program. Through this he was able to explore his creative talent in painting and develop several techniques and approaches to his work. Corwin was awarded a $30,000 grant by the John and Ann Taylor Foundation to continue painting. Since then he has acquired numerous exhibitions and awards. He attended Marietta College and Montana State University for Studio Art and Art Education.

Corwin was voted 2nd best artist of the Flathead Valley!

Xavier Ortega ~ Fine Art Photography

The Phoenix Collection is now featuring fine art photography by Xavier Ortega. His work is fabulous as you can see. Xavier Ortega‘s  website is a real treat if you love animals and appreciate the art of photography. Our current header is “The Beautiful Five.” The Camargue horse is an ancient breed of horse indigenous to the Camargue area in southern France. Its origins remain relatively unknown, although it is generally considered one of the oldest breeds of horses in the world. A herd of white Camargue horses galloping through the river in the effervescent, blue-sky day made for some stunning photos from Barcelona-based photographer Xavier Oretga. The Spanish fine art photographer travelled hundreds of miles to capture this magical moment of the rare animals racing wildly through the water. Rushing along the remote landscape, the surf is kicked up and the animals’ movements blurred, as they are permitted to run free outside of their ranches along the Rhone River, near Arles, France.
